Two Japanese-Inspired Café Finds for Your Melbourne List

Kuppi’s Melbourne Notes: little discoveries for curious weekends.
Some weekends call for an unhurried café stop. If you enjoy Japanese-inspired flavours, here are two Melbourne spots that caught our eye. We have not visited them for this article, so consider this a discovery list rather than a personal review.
Heebi, Carlton
Reported by Broadsheet in June 2026, Heebi is a coffee house inspired by Japanese kissaten. The menu described in the opening story included Japanese butter rolls and drinks topped with matcha cream—an intriguing combination for a coffee-and-something-sweet kind of day.
Read the Broadsheet introduction to Heebi for more about the café.
Matcha Mate, Collingwood
Matcha Mate’s standalone Collingwood shop opened at the end of 2025 after the business began as a pop-up. Broadsheet’s January 2026 story describes hand-whisked matcha drinks and treats including warabi mochi. If you are curious about different ways to enjoy matcha, add it to your list.
Find out more in Broadsheet’s introduction to Matcha Mate.
Make a little afternoon of it
Pick one café, leave a little room in your schedule and see what else catches your eye nearby. Melbourne has a way of turning a simple drink into a small adventure.
For a little matcha-inspired colour at home, have a look at our Little Japan collection, which includes matcha and croissant earrings.
